Why this index exists

Crematorium conditions in Delhi are an active civic story, and the reporting has had to rely on individual accounts because there has been no public record of what any given ground is actually like on the day. Families cannot check whether the electric unit at their nearest ghat is running before they set out, and reporters covering the beat have no source to cite.

That is what this guide is for. It is not a price list, and it deliberately carries no figures.

What is recorded, and what is not

For every ground we cover:

  • Whether an electric unit is listed as available. A unit that has been out of service for a month turns an electric cremation into a wood one on arrival, at a different wait and a different cost.
  • The expected wait at peak, where information is available.
  • Facilities - whether there are working toilets and a covered place to sit. Families wait for hours, often with elderly relatives.
  • Hearse access and parking.
  • The documents families are commonly asked to carry.

No charges appear here. That is a deliberate decision, not an omission: no rupee figure appears anywhere on this site. What a ground costs depends on the cremation method and what is bought there, and the useful thing we can publish is who collects what - the municipal counter, the wood vendor, or a service like ours. Ask us on the call what your case comes to.

Before you travel

Timings, availability and waiting conditions can change. Call the crematorium or speak with Swargdwar before leaving, especially when an electric or CNG unit is required. A field for which information is unavailable reads "Not recorded."
